J-Zone’s Learning to Accept Rap’s Genoration Gap on Egotripland

As you all know (is there an all? Does anyone ever even read these sparse posts?) I only blog once in a blue moon. But this was such a great read I had to post this. I’m as guilty as any other aging DJ of complaining about the new generation of Serato DJs. This gave me piece of mind that I’m not the only one. Check it!

Also been meaning to check his book out.

Some press I missed. Sparkle after party

I was asked to DJ the big after party for the screening of Sparkle in NYC. Definitely one of my most memorable experiences as a DJ was having Valerie Simpson come over and give me props. VALERIE SIMPSON! If you don’t know about her, please study up. She’s half of the duo Ashford and Simpson and they wrote so many amazing songs! Click the photo for a link to the story on the party:

Diana in Central Park

In another post that will undoubtedly date me. Seeing the ad for this concert DVD reminded me that I wanted to post video from this concert. I remember watching this in our partially finished basement in St. Louis with my mom and dad when I was a little girl and thinking that Diana Ross was The Most! And then getting stuck in the rain and my hair looked nothing like hers (mad)… Whenever the wind blows my hair in my face I think of her fighting the weather in Central park! Remember when things like this were important to people? Remember the big debut of the I’m Bad video? It makes me so sad to see what’s happened to the music industry when I remember things like this when families would get together in front of the TV and enjoy art/culture together and the artist returning the love by fighting the weather and finishing the show. Anyway, here it is.

I Have a New Idea

I love Spank Rock. I loved the Bangers and Cash album and this single that you can stream sounds like a continuation of those nasty party jams he and Benny Blanco released a few years ago. What a lovely gift for my inbox on a sunny Thursday.

You can also buy merch and pre-order the album here on his website. DO IT!

DESCRIPTION

SoHo’s iconic Mercer Hotel has always been synonymous with discriminating style and unparalleled quality; and its (literally) underground nightclub, subMercer, is no exception to setting that benchmark.

With its musical virtuosity from the established residencies of Gotham’s top DJs and producers, subMercer has emerged as one of NYC’s foremost, undiluted club music venues — thanks largely to the creative advocacy of its owner, Andre Balazs, and the fastidious bookings and uncompromising vision of its director, Gabby Mejia. With her natural warmth as a consummate hostess, Gabby has cultivated and nurtured a unique “family feel” for all those involved with the music-driven boite and its ever-growing fan base of music aficionados.

The subMercer, with its cozy and intimate setting, is also complimented by the magnitude and clarity of its impressive sound system, making it the ideal locale for the elite roster of DJs who play there. With its pristine acoustic quality and ambience, the subMercer has nurtured a special cadre of A-list musical talent by encouraging them to explore their musical range in a club setting with no restrictions.

As director of the subterranean lair, burrowed two floors beneath the street and dedicated to the prosperity of underground music, Ms. Mejia has now set her sights on amplifying the subMercer’s appeal with the debut of its eponymous music label, cleverly subtitled, The Underground Series(pun intended), which seeks to bridge the underground music scene to a wider audience and keep NYC at the forefront of cutting edge music.  Refreshingly, it is also a departure from the ubiquitous boutique hotel lounge CD compilation of mainstream songs.  T.U.S. features original content from NYC’s most notable underground dance music producers…on vinyl as a stamp of acoustic integrity for DJs and audiophiles alike. The label is subMercer’s unique contribution to New York’s distinctive cultural and creative fabric, and a token of gratitude to the DJs and producers who have collectively secured subMercer as the epicenter for latest and best in underground music.  The record’s red packaging with its unmistakable gold ((M)) logo mirrors the club’s mythical red door with solid gold letters that lets both DJs and revelers know that they’ve arrived at their destination.

For the label’s inaugural edition, it enlists the incredible production talent of NY underground luminaries, Marcos Cabral and Eli Escobar – both regular mainstays at subMercer.  A respected veteran of NYC’s dance scene, Marcos Cabral, is also widely known for his duo, Runaway, and its record label, On The Prowl, as well as for his vast connections with distinguished record labels across the globe.  A native New Yorker, Eli Escobar, has steadily built a name for himself over the years as one of the city’s most well-versed and dexterous turntablists.  With his impressive catalogue of song production and remixes for famous artists, he has duly earned his title as “NY’s Finest.”

In keeping with the recent resurgence and evolution of deep house, both artists have laced their voluptuous beats with the sensual female vocals of Lindsay Mound and another beloved subMercer DJ resident, Lindsey Caldwell.  The result is an irresistible affair – the kind of seduction that could only go down in a hotel.
